All Home-Start Dacorum volunteers are parents or people who have had experience bringing up children. Our volunteers are of all ages, nationalities and come from all walks of life. As well as as home-visiting volunteers, we welcome volunteers to support at weekly Family Groups.
After a careful selection process, volunteers attend a 40 hour training course to fully prepare them for their role with Home-Start Dacorum. During this time a variety of checks are undertaken: Enhanced Criminal Records Bureau (CRB), and personal references.
Home-Start Dacorum volunteers are not paid to provide support. Although they receive training, they are not professionals so they will not replace the support provided by a social worker or a health visitor. The support of a volunteer is free and confidential.
Home visiting volunteers give friendship as well as emotional and practical help to parents. Volunteers visit families in their own homes and usually give between two and three hours a week, although this can be flexible.
Where possible, Home-Start Dacorum tries to match the volunteer's skills and experiences to the needs of the family they support.
